Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy

A production of Brandenburger Theater

In the adaptation by John von Düffel

Macbeth brings misfortune – in the theatre, the play is only referred to as the «Scottish play» so as not to conjure up the evil spirits of what is probably Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy.

Shakespeare’s “Ride from Hell”, condensed to its glowing core: Macbeth and his «Lady» don’t just dream of grasping the Scottish royal crown and unrestricted power – they cruelly put their plans into action until their own ambition brings them crashing to the ground.

What the will to power can do to a person has probably never been described as impressively as in this great drama, which loses none of its power even in its small form:

“John von Düffel has not only created the fabulous translation, he has concentrated the action entirely on the drama of the couple's relationship and so cleverly shortened the drama, which is peppered with royal power games and murderous orgies, that the cycle of madness and violence can be understood.” (Die Welt)
